Art

Intent

At Lent Rise School we aim to deliver the national curriculum through high quality art and design teaching, which stimulates creativity and imagination. This provides children with visual, tactile and sensory experiences to understand and respond to the world in a special way. We enable children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Children will develop the ability and an increasing confidence to control materials, tools and techniques. Our children will explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. They will foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

Implementation

At Lent Rise School, we implement an art curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Art is planned and taught in half termly modules, focusing on the knowledge and skills outlined in the Primary National Curriculum. Each module covers a particular area of art to explore drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printing and textiles. They will explore elements of art within this, such as colour, tone/for, patterned/texture, line/shape and art vocabulary. Each art module allows for pupils to develop their artistic skills, including generating ideas, making art, knowledge and understanding and evaluating.

Impact

The impact of our art curriculum can be seen in children’s sketch books they produce and the outcomes for all groups of pupils. Children will retain knowledge about their focus artists for each module of work. Children will understand what being in ‘artist’ means and apply the taught techniques into their own creative artwork, building upon this year on year.  As artists, children will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood. Pupils’ progress is measured through ongoing assessment and through three key assessment points during the year. Work is planned to address misconceptions and gaps in learning are identified to ensure that the curriculum effectively meets the needs of all pupils.

Pathway Subject Statement:

To create an environment where we encourage children to become competent, reflective and curious artists, who are willing to take risks with different media, using artists and the world around them for inspiration.
