Autumn Term

Welcome to Year 5
Meet our Teachers
Our Autumn Learning

In the Autumn term we will are going back in time to learn all about World War 2. We will be learning about the home front, land girls, the Blitz, 'dig for victory', evacuees and bomb shelters. We will be exploring these through a range of hand on and written tasks.

In English this term, we are reading 'Letters from the Lighthouse' by Emma Carroll. This story follows the journey of a brother and sister whose older sister goes missing while they are being evacuated from London to Budmouth Point during the Second World War. We will be completing a range of writing tasks, including character descriptions , diary entries and postcards, as well as developing our reading skills in various comprehension tasks. We also will be participating in Read Write Inc Spelling lessons.

In Maths, we are currently focusing on Number. We are working on extending our knowledge of place value and number recognition of larger numbers beyond 1000 and rounding these! We will then be moving onto addition and subtraction throughout this half term, with a focus on estimating and exchanging.

Trips, Visits and Visitors
In the Autumn term we are visiting Bletchley Park to learn more about code breaking during World War 2. We will also visit Winchester Science Museum in spring and have a virtual reality Mayan experience in the summer term!
